Hair extensions can often be difficult to understand if you’re not properly informed. From wearing them to cleaning them, there are so many instructions to making hair extensions work for you while providing a lasting life so you don’t have to waste your money constantly re-purchasing extensions because of any lack of care. But one of the most important aspects of keeping hair extensions long-lasting is how you store your extensions when you’re not wearing them.
1. After you’ve washed your hair extensions, remove any tangles and knots
We know, it’s been a long day, you’ve removed your hair extensions and you just want to go to bed. However not properly removing any knots and tangles in your extensions can lead to literally destroying them. Smooth out those extensions and especially do this while you’re wearing them. It’ll make things easier for you in the long run.
2. Add natural protection
After your clip-ins have been straightened, removed and washed, it’s time to add a drop of natural oil or serum (because natural oils do the work of most conditioners without the unnecessary chemicals) in the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together and add the oil from end to end of your extensions. This is to help your hair extensions maintain moisture so they don’t dry out, just as you would your natural hair. However make sure you don’t use too much oil or serum because you don’t want your extensions to appear oily the next day, so only apply this step every now and again.
3. Find a container
If you’re in a pinch and don’t have any storage bags or hangers on hand, It’s important to find the right container to store your extensions. One that is both wide and long enough so your extensions won’t be too cramped and one that does provide ventilation. If you have the perfect container but it doesn’t have ventilation, it’s okay to punch a few holes into the lid, as long as you’re comfortable with doing so. Then remove any dust and dirt as well as any other objects that might be in the container as well so you’re able to keep your extensions as fresh as possible.
4. Find the right location
You need to be picky about the location of where you store your extensions as much as the container in which you put your extensions in. Any location with direct sunlight is always a bad choice, as well as a location that is either too hot or too cold. It’s also important to choose a location that won’t cause pets or children to interact with your stored hair extensions so a location out of reach is a good idea. Once you find your perfect storing location, make sure your container isn’t placed underneath other items, like boxes or clothes, which may result in crushing your extensions.
